As connected speakers gain more and more ground, shelves lose it each year. By 2021, connected speakers are expected to logically take over, according to the specialized blog MitxDesignTech.
A bright future for connected speakers? Analysts at Canalys are convinced of it. According to their estimates, the number of these small speakers should multiply starting this year, increasing from 114 million units last year to nearly 207.9 million units in 2019, representing an increase of 82.4%. The company estimates that the number of connected speakers in use worldwide will approach 600 million units by 2023.

This market is primarily driven by Google, Amazon, and others, who are constantly improving their smart assistants, making them increasingly powerful and useful. There are also other players, including Chinese ones, who equip connected speakers in the Middle Kingdom, where Google and Amazon have no presence.

In comparison, the tablet market is very sluggish. This product category, which was introduced in 2010 by the late Steve Jobs with the first iPad of its kind, continues to decline year after year. Canalys even estimates that the number of speakers should surpass the number of iPads by 2021, as things evolve.

While at this stage connected speakers are particularly popular in the United States, where the American market is expected to represent 42.2% of the global installed base by 2019, the Asian market still offers significant growth potential. Therefore, connected speakers are expected to gain ground compared to tablets, especially since some speakers themselves have touch screens that serve as small side shelves and speakers.
